Why Evolution is True

Personally writen by Kyle Edginton

Another book down and I’m happy to have made the decision to pick up and read Why Evolution Is True by Jerry A. Coyne. Jerry has taken the concept of evolution, which is so complex and so deeply contested between the religious and scientific worlds, and presented it in an easily understood and convincing manner.

Why Evolution Is True shows how science has taken on the task of proving Darwin’s theory of evolution from many different angles using many different techniques. Each of these pathes have come to the same conclusion and confirming, supporting and expanding the conclusions of the other pathes, that evolution is in fact…fact.

Some time ago I wrote a post about Evolution vs. Creation. In that post I made the comment that the theories of evolution and creation are inconclusive and completely unprovable. After reading Why Evolution Is True I have to apologize to all the evolutions for not having done my research. They have…period! Evolution has been proven even to the point humans evolved as opposed to being created. Even the “open-minded” creationists concede that evolution is true but stop short of agreeing that man was evolved. I would, therefore, rewrite my comment that “the theory of creation is inconclusive and completely unprovable.”

In fact, the theory of creation is not even a theory. It is simply a belief. A theory must be testable and make verifiable predictions, neither of which creation can do.

When I think that creation essentially comes from the Bible (or any other religious book) I have to think then about when these books were written. They were written at a time when the world of science had not even begun to understand the implications of the world around us. With the knowledge and technologies that we have today, if the Bible were to be written now, what would it say. The Bible was written by men. The Bible was written to suite the belief system in place at the time (granted it was written over a large amount of time – in human terms anyway).

I do not want to be seen as discrediting the teachings in the Bible, as the principles of good and evil and doing well towards your fellow man have survived the test of human time. I simply want to point that that maybe the idea of creation was wrong and we have enough knowledge and proof now to say so.

Well said Kyle. You are on the right track I think with the fact that the creation story was written a long time ago before many things were known facts. You make a good point about the fact that even though that is incorrect, the bible still holds many good principals. Something for me to mull over.

I know I posted a comment in one of your other posts that I would really like to get together to discuss some of these things we have both been reading about. We’ve all been busy I guess, but let’s make it happen. I love your process of thinking and would like to discuss / debate some things with you and Amelia.
